5. Greetings from Ukraine - late-November '99 -tour. It was a while ago since
I've been feeling so lost when it comes to the language -- actually languages
-- of a society. I don't speak Ukrainian (or Russian which was very common as
well) to save my life. But I must say, that was about the only thing that was
really exotic about this trip, which I had otherwise anticipated as "different",
"wild", or perhaps even "weird". All that appeared to be just preconception-nonsense.
Kiev is a very nice city with a wonderful crowd of musicians, students and a
large music-appreciating audience. I played with two excellent musicians from
Kharkiv (I mean really great skillful musicians): Denis Dudko, bass; Aleksandr
Lebedyenko, drums; and also with Vitaly Ivanov, alto sax (from Kiev). We played
two gigs which were smashing successes. Thanks to Glier Conservatory for introducing
me many jazz students & teachers who showed a lot of focus and dedication for
this so-called jazz music. Thanks also to Oleksey Kohan, Vyatcheslav Krishtofovich,
and other great people who became great friends. A few brief memories: a. Very
cold weather, b. Funny cabs (any private car! Just pay 3-5 Hrivna and you're
set!), c. Great food, d. I gave more autographs than in Japan... Anyway, if
you have never heard of "Jazz in Ukraine" before, I can at least assure you
two things: You'll find a great rhythm section from Kharkiv, and a great audience
in Kiev! a. Scandinavia-tour coming up, February 11-25. This time it's teaching
in Jyväskylä, where I'm honored to participate in the development of a new book
in improvisation. Additionally, I'll visit Joensuu, Helsinki and Stockholm on
this trip. _______________________________________ 6. MP3's, new set of tunes.
There is a new set of tunes available for free on my mp3-site. Go and download
them for yourself! And by clicking on the various DAM-cds, you can listen to
ALL of the contents on the cds in lo-fi (actually it sounds quite good). No
purchase necessary... (as the cliché goes). http://www.mp3.com/mikamusik _______________________________________
7. New & Old CDs. A. "SOUND OF VILLAGE", duo w. perc. Yusuke Yamamoto is now
available as a DAM cd on mp3.com. You can download a few songs for free, and
listen to the rest as well. And the best thing, this cd costs only US $ 9.99.
This DAM cd is compatible with CD-players and mp3-players. B. "HUR MAN RÄDDAR
KÄRLEKEN & ANNAT..." together with vocalist Johanna Grüssner is released now
by YLE ! This cd contains Swedish standards (by O Adolphson, M Wiehe, M Dominique,
L Färnlöf, E Taube and more) and a few original compositions by me. (One track
is available on "Special Edition"). This CD is now available in Finland and
will be soon in Sweden. C. "ANNOUNCEMENT" on YLE, is available from the distributors
(see #3) or as a DAM cd (mp3.com) D. "ON THE MOVE" is available from the distributors
(see #3) or as a DAM cd (mp3.com) E. "MYTHS AND BELIEFS" is available through
GM-Recordings (www.gmrecordings.com), in case you find it in your local record
store, or the online stores. Information about all cds: http://www.geocities.com/mika_pohjola/cds.htm
_______________________________________ 8. My radio program on YLE, Finland:
Radio New York's latest news. An announcement for the listeners in Finland:
Radio New York sänds varannan lördag kl. 22:15 på Radio Vega längs kusten i
Finland. (Tyvärr ej på FSR Mix). Lör 15.1. "Att leva i USA & Norden". Gäster:
Nina Sederholm och Johanna Grüssner. Lör 29.1. "The Manhattan Transfer":s succéhistoria,

been great! I have listened to a lot of stuff lately, and am featuring many
starting in February. If you are a New York-related artist, please feel free
to send your music to me. (Radio NY, att. Mika Pohjola, 333 E 14th St, 9th fl;
NY, NY 10003) Also, if you know about funny incidents in New York City, you
can e-mail me at mailto:brev@usa.com Radio New York on the net: http://newyork.lovesmusic.com
_______________________________________ 9. "What's this e-mail all about? Who
is this?!" If you have not received "News Ahead" before and wonder why you received
it now, here may be why you're on the list: * Do you live in New York? * Have
you given your business card/signed my mailing list? * Are you a fellow musician?
Please include my name and address on *your* mailing list. * Do you work for
media/ a music agency? * None of the above? It *could* be an error. Please be
assured, that you can request a removal from any and all mailing lists at any
time. I apologize if you have requested a removal before and I haven't been
able to complete it for you. (My computer crashed once in December while I removed
a few names, and the file didn't get updated.) Again, I apologize. Please send
me another reminder with "Remove" on the subject header. Thanks. a. It's time
for a MAILING LIST RENOVATION! I'm trying to make some sense of this mailing
list and the contents of the e-mail. Many people keep telling me: "Your e-mail
comes too late...", or "too early... I forget..." . Therefore, there will be
three mailing lists: I. ALL (News Ahead once a month) II. NEW YORK (Gig announcement
only, two days before the gig) III. MEDIA (Gig + CD announcements as early as
I know about them) You can be on any, all or none of these mailing lists. (I
do not recommend that you are on all these lists - you might get bored and bothered
in the long run...) If you don't know which one is best, I recommend the "All"
- list only. You are currently on the "All"-list, and will remain on it without
any action from your part. Please e-mail to me: "Add me to NY-list", or "Add
me to Media-list", and you will do me a great favor indeed. Thank you so much
in advance. _______________________________________ If you are completely uninterested
in all of the above, you and act for your (and my) best interest: a. You can
delete this e-mail (a good option for those whose mood change from day to day)
;-) This "News Ahead" comes about once a month. b. You can e-mail me (to mikamusik@email.com)
and express your anger - most efficiently with the powerful word "remove" in
the subject header. That substitutes ALL swear words very favorably. |
